Skill Wheel

As part of a skills-first campaign, we crowdsourced a shortlist of the most important skills required by the business and its employees. Creating over 100 in-the-moment items of learning, these items were timed at 1-4 minutes in duration each. To allow for manager, team and personal playlist curation, we created the skill wheel. A personalised ‘now’ and ‘then’ playlist creator for skills development.

Task

Ensure users globally can successfully navigate and curate a personal playlist, from over 100+ items of skills-based content, through 9 topics, in under 30 seconds.

The release of the Skill Wheel increased
community engagement by over 300%,
driving it to be the fastest-growing
community in company history.

By working with real users and business leaders in the early product design stages, we were able to understand pain points in using large content library offerings. ‘Overwhelmed’, ‘lack of clear direction’ and ‘time-consuming’ were clear patterns from across a 400-person sub-section.

Our goal was clear; the content needs to be useful and actionable, but that doesn’t matter if users can’t find it quickly, easily and then confidently make a selection to engage with.

A simple journey,
broken down into easy
to navigate steps.

We looked externally for inspiration, in both UI and navigation management. Breaking a simple process down even further, so it’s one small decision to be made at a time.

Pain points mentioned being overwhelmed with options and being unsure how to move forward. The Skill Wheel focused on forward motion at all times – what do you want to focus on > where are you now? > where do you want to be? > Let’s start that journey.

Only house colours were used, staying within the brand guidelines for fonts also. Overall visual consistency was trialled with end users in a series of lo-fi prototypes before production.

Let’s see if we’re a good product
design fit for each other.
